Old fashioned

Everyone in my neighborhood suddenly started wearing these rain boots in the last year.

At first I was all, those are kinda weird. Then I was all, those must be really dry. Then I was all, I gotta get me some of those. I am nothing if not a follower when it comes to the stuff other moms are doing in my neighborhood. That's how I convinced Josh to let me buy the Bugaboo back in the day.

Anyway, considering I walk to and from school and the store and whatnot every day and there's always a lot of damn puddles around, I thought they would be a good investment. That's what you call rain boots in this price category. An "investment." I might as well put solid gold on my feet for these prices.

But when I went online to find them, it was impossible to find size 7 in any color, much less black. What the hell? I tweeted about my lack of boot availability and a friend sent me a message that I should check Nordstrom. So I drove my ass up to the suburbs this week with Emmie and Maeve in tow to see what was happening. Shoe shopping with two kids. Why yes, I am clinically insane, thanks for asking.

Success! A size 7, but in silver. Not too offensive, but not my first choice. The saleswoman told me I could get on the waitlist for black, and that I would be No. 3 but she recommended taking the silver ones because they were the last pair on earth in size 7. OK, not really earth, but in America.

I took them home with hopes of a black pair dancing in my head. But then the color became less significant because ZOMG WHAT KIND OF PANTS DO YOU WEAR WITH THESE?

Leggings? Leggings are making a comeback. But what the hell does a three-months-postpartum fatass wear with leggings so as not to look totally 1987 or totally fat? And skinny jeans? Yes, skinny jeans. But God knows I am not forking over designer money for jeans that could A. be uncool in a minute and B. fit me for a few months before I lose all the weight. So I was thinking maybe Old Navy would do me right in that department, but I have never purchased jeans at Old Navy. Are they decent? I am looking for looks, yes, but also cheap since I'm not going to get much mileage on them.

What to do, what to do? So readers, those of you schooled in all things fashionable or even those who just read US Weekly and read about the fashion, can you recommend what I should do? It's not like I will wear these boots every day this spring, just days when it's rainy or wet. Which is like almost every spring day in Chicago. But you know what I mean.

It's so funny Hunter wellies are fashionable in your neck of the woods, I've had a pair for yonks, they're just wellies over here though they do have a good reputation. I usually wear skinny or straight leg jeans/trousers with them, not keen on leggings. You can also get woollen wellie socks that fold over the top if you're looking for an authentic English Lord look.

I agree with the Old Navy and Target. Never bought jeans at target, but I have had some success at Old Navy. Just go without the kids as you'll have to try on oodles of jeans (if you're anything like me). I bought 2 pair right after #3, swearing they would be my "transition" jeans. I still have them, 3 years later and they are my "fat day" jeans. Just as an FYI, you don't need to wash denim every time you wear them. You can wear them up to 7 times before washing them so they get that good, comfortable, worn in feeling. :)
Love the boots. I want red.

I love Old Navy jeans. At last I loved them last time I bought them for me which was about a year or so ago. Now I only buy jeans in size 3T. But Old Navy adult jeans have been good to me in the past.

Love those wellies, and I actually really like silver. They are everywhere here, too. The cute college girls wear them with leggings, boyfriend button-downs, and legwarmers/ socks that stick out over the top of the boots. Gad students and young professors wear them with flowy skirts and tailored jackets, or denim pencil skirts and thick tights w/ sweaters and scarves.

Everyone does skinnies as a default with everything. I have some from ON, but they thing is, they are not skinny enough in the leg, no matter what size I buy (and I have every size from 2-6). Ditto Gap. (also, my legs are not particularly skinnier than average, either. the jeans are baggy, is my point) I actually like (I am so ashamed to admit this in public) Forever 21 skinnies. Also H&M makes denim leggings that are fine if you are wearing a substantial shirt.

I had the same problem. I got an awesome pair of green ones with the cream welly socks for christmas. I, too, am not a huge fan of the legging. I did exactly what you mentioned....not willing to fork over a large amount on skinny jeans....I bought a pair at old navy. and....I actually like them!!! And they look super cute with the boots! :)

Also, a ladies wax jacket from Barbour looks fantastic with these wellies on a rainy day. You'll be starting a new trend right there :-) They're not cheap but will last forever, we have a outlet near us which I'm very thankful for!

I can't find really skinny jeans at ON, either. Target has some, or *cough*walmart*cough* that fit pretty well, at least so far...

Hi! I am new to your blog but I figured what the heck, I'll weigh in. I think you should try leggings. Black leggings can be really slimming with a long top. Gap has some great ones right now that a lot of my post-partum friends swear by! Gap Maternity has some awesome ones, too, that are super low, so they don't pinch your stomach. I think some black leggings, a long top and your new boots would be tres stylish. :) And I think the silver is better than the black anyway.

I think it's the "Girlfriend" Old Navy jeans that I like but be careful as they are cut low in the back. They fit really well, though. Love those boots. Too cute. I am so boot-obsessed lately! They quit making my favorite UGGs so I am feeling boot deprivation.

Leggings would look great with them and they are oh, so comfortable. I also agree with Sarah that Forever21 and H&M have great skinny jeans. I just nought a pair at Forever21 for $10!

I'm jumping on the Target wagon. I wanted a pair for New Year's Eve that weren't a fortune, and Forever 21's were made as though they were to fit a 21 year old...WTF? I looked like an old woman trying to fit into a 21 year old's jeans (and I'm only 30!). I did have success at Target, though. Their Mossimo brand fit perfectly, and although $30 was a *little* more than I had wanted to pay (cheapskate alert), I've worn those bad boys to get every dollar's worth in the past two months. Good luck! I think the silver sounds awesome...black is so blah.

I've had some success with jeans at Old Navy.

I'm tall, so my options are limited. I also have a decent set of hips (probably why 2 out my 3 kids fells out without my pushing). I also hate anything that comes up over my belly button. I know....I'm a pain in the ass.

I wear the Diva and the Sweetheart from Old Navy.

I actually DO have to wash mine every time I wear them because, during the course of the day, they get a workout and end up falling off me. I toss them in the wash and shrink them again and it's all good.

I know, I need to buy new pants in a smaller size instead of shrinking them like the woman on the commercial. But, I don't have any time. And I'm cheap.

So, I shrink them and wear a belt and, when my kids puke on them, I don't care because, hey, tbey were like $20. at the outlet, so who cares?!

Love the boots, BTW. I can't pull off boots. I fall. I'm cheap AND clumsy.

OK, I'm cutting right to the chase-How much were those boots? More than $200? If you are only going to wear them when it's wet and puddly, you could have gotten a way cuter pair at Target for like $30. (Yes, this is the ... how do you spell frugale? friend you never wanted). And then it wouldn't matter what kind of pants you wore with them.

And I have jeans from Old Navy - The Sweetheart ones are not too "show-your-ass-crackish-low."

Cuz yeah, I'm that frugale... how the eff do you spell that word? ... friend!

I've got 6 pairs of pants I can wear to work because they don't have holes in them, 3 are old navy jeans, 2 are jcrew vintage stretch cords and one is some random pair of jeans from express. obviously the jcrew and express pants were purchased for me as birthday and christmas presents because I am cheap. I say go with the ON, but yeah, you will have to try on a bunch of pairs and styles.

I also have been having a bitch of a time finding the Hunter wellies in 7s here in Ohio. I had ordered two super cute pairs from Evercreatures in the UK, but they haven't come in yet, and I'm going to Ireland at the end of the week... so I had to suck it up and buy a no name brand pair from Macy's! Oh! The HORROR!

Anyway, kudos on getting your pair. I think they will be well worth the price in the end.

ON jeans work fine. Not great, but good enough. They stretch out like Carla said, but hey they're like 20 bucks so who cares?! I wear the Sweetheart jeans and they don't make my pregnant ass look like it could cover a whole city block. Score! They're on sale until 3/4 too!

Good luck!

Rain boots are "so in" down in the South now, too! But not black ones -- I have an awesome pair of pink ones with yellow, orange and hot pink polka dots. Here everyone wears them in all these really good patterns and prints. :-)

I think maybe growing up in the South (ahem, deer and duck hunting, anyone?) all us girls got stuck making do with our brothers black or hunter green rubber boots, so now we want funky ones!!!

Old Navy! I went through the same thing back in December - when I wanted a pair of skinny jeans, but did not want to spend a lot... Can't wear them to work, they could go out at any time - I had a bunch of reasons why I didnt want to make a huge investment. I got a pair for $15 at Old Navy!!!!!!! and I LOVE THEM!

good luck.

I have two pairs of wellies, a short and a long pair. I wear them all the time and have had them for years. I don't know how you do spring or fall without them. You will love having them!
