Random questions

So I have a bunch of weird unconnected assvice requests for you all.

1. If your child did not want to drink milk when you weaned them, what did you do?
We decided to give Emmie some whole-milk yogurt this weekend to see how she tolerated it. I am pleased to report, no reactions! Which meant we figured it was safe to see if she would tolerate a little whole milk. Unfortunately, she believed we were trying to assassinate her and violently refused to drink it. She would not drink it from a cup, she would not drink it down or up. She would not drink it from a bottle, she would not, could not, even with threats of throttle. So, uh, yeah. We're T-minus three weeks from weaning and she wants nothing to do with whole milk. Awesome! (She will, however, drink breastmilk from a bottle or water from a sippy with no problem. So I don't think it has anything to do with the container.)

2. How do you make a moist turkey breast at home?
For the second time on recent memory, I bought a high-quality, boneless turkey breast (paid 12 freaking dollars for it) and threw it in the slowcooker covered with chicken broth. For the second time in recent memory, said turkey breast was dry and awful. We threw out the leftovers it was so bad. Anyone know how you could possibly have a dry turkey breast when immersing it in liquid?

3. If you are a stay-at-home parent, do you get a "day off" each week? And if so, does your spouse get a "day off" too? How do you handle this?
Not that anyone in this house argues about who spends what time doing what. Nope. Everything here is sunshine and rainbows. In fact, I just got back from feeding the unicorn we keep outside. It shits money, too! We're just hunky-dory here.

4. I need to branch out in my designer jeans ownership. What brand can you recommend?
I am a devoted wearer of Seven For All Mankind. But I am in need of a new pair -- I'm down to my pre-Emmie-pregnancy weight and all my old jeans require the use of a belt or I flash the whole world my ass-crack every time I bend down. So wondering if there's anything better out there. I have Christmas money for new jeans that's burning a hole in my pocket. (Ha! Pocket, jeans, I kill myself.)

Assvice welcomed and encouraged, please!

1. I do not have a child, so I have no assvice.

2. I don't know why the turkey wasn't moist after cooking it in liquid all day. Actually, every time I've cooked boneless chicken in the slowcooker all day, it's been dry. maybe put a thermometer in the breast so you can know when the meat is actually done?

3. See number one. However, when I didn't have a job and all i did was keep the house clean and have meals waiting for my husband, I would get very upset when it would be his one time during the week to cook and he'd say "let's go out and eat" when I said that during the week the answer was always "we don't have any money". The solution was for me to get a job...hmm, but yes, I can see how that isn't the answer here. Maybe pull a Trish and just run off during the weekend leaving him home with the kids.

4. I just recently upgraded to owning JCrew pants...In other words, I know squat about designer jeans. Though one of my coworkers swears by Lucky brand.

Do you have to wean? Now that Emmie can have dairy, why don't you just sit down and enjoy some ice cream and consider putting off weaning her. The new World Health Organization guidelines recommend not weaning until at least age 2, anyway.
My son had a similar dairy intolerance, and outgrew it at about 9 months. He wouldn't take cow's milk either, but liked cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, everything else. I was worried about him not getting enough Vitamin D. Then one day, at about 15 months, he decided he did like cow's milk and has had at least one sippy cup full every day since.
Kids are so strange.

1. We're having the same problem. I had to stop breastfeeding at 7 months, but Sydney handled the switch to formula like a pro. She hates whole milk, though. She seems to tolerate 2%, but she still won't take it in a bottle. Our pediatrician says she's technically ok with formula until she's two -- maybe you could try that? It's not cheap, though.

2. I've never had luck with poultry and the crock pot. It always works better roasted in the oven -- using a thermometer to know for sure when it's done.

3. I work full time and my kids are in daycare. I have total respect for you staying home -- I don't think I could do it. I would say you definitely need a break.

4. Some day maybe I'll be small enough for designer jeans. Until then...*sigh*.

1. 9 months until we start weaning so I can't help you there.

2. Again, can't help you. I don't cook. Anything I make would be dry.

3. I don't get a day off necessarily but I do hand the baby off to my husband a lot on the weekends. I also usually decide it's imperative that we go to Target and since he generally hates Target on the weekends, I get to go and shop uninterrupted.

4. I do know something about jeans! I too usually wear Sevens but since I still have a ways to go before I fit into my pre-pregnancy Sevens, I've been wearing Levi's from Kohls.

Have you tried the Blue Jean Bar in Lincoln Park? I've never been there but I've heard good things about them. If you don't find anything there, it is across the street from Barney's which, last time I was in there, had a good jeans selection. I would try to do that on your "day off" though. I wouldn't imagine it would be easy to try on a bunch of jeans with 2 kids.

I worked at a store that sold a lot of jeans in college. The owner would always tell people that good denim has memory. He would always recommend buying jeans as tight as you can stand and wearing them for about 2 weeks without washing them to get them to conform to your curves. It's pretty gross but it does work.

Hope that helps!

So, yeah, I don't know jack crap about 1-3, but jeans... You KNOW how I feel about Express. They are cheap-ish and they look damn sexy too, in my opinion.

Hi....I've been lurking on your blog for a few months. You're hilarious!! I have 3 teenage daughters.
1) Do you warm the milk? My kids hated cold milk when they were little. Or you could try adding a little chocolate syrup to the milk (everyone don't freak out on me, it's just a suggestion!) :)
2) Cooking bags!! They work great! and no mess to clean up!
3) HAHAHAHA! but I can promise you that one day you will be sitting around by yourself wondering what to do because you're kids are out and about with friends and the husband is hiding in the garage!
My all time favorite saying that I live by "The days are long but the years are short"
4)Banana Republic! They're just a little higher in the back, so no "crack"

Take care!

1. No advice here, though the temperature thing mentioned by a previous poster makes sense. Also, I'd suggest that you just keep trying it. Methinks she'll drink it eventually. (And besides, there are other ways -- which I know you're well acquainted with -- to provide fat and calcium.)

2. Poultry always gets dry-ish for me in the slow cooker, probably cuz I leave it in there like all day. (Though when I did a whole chicken recently, it turned out great.) The turkey breast recipe I've used in the past is for the oven.

3. Hmm, not a SAHM, so no advice. But maybe you could each negotiate a free afternoon. Certainly, you deserve/need a break from the kids.

4. I like my jeans from Ann Taylor, but I'd love to try Joe's Jeans sometime. I base this solely on a recommendation from the Oprah show where they said they have a nice curve that makes your butt look good. :) I have yet to be at a happy size, though, where I feel like plunking down serious dough for jeans.

1. My two and a half year old did not like drinking cow's milk when he was one year old. We just kept offering it to him. Now he loves drinking milk.

3. You should definitely get a day off! DH and I both work outside the home. My DH was recently working weekend shifts with some days off during the week. So, I got no time off on the weekends, but he got child-free days during the week. Oh, no, that will not fly. We got his work schedule changed. Mama was not happy without breaks.

I put a sippy cup of milk on the table every morning. Eventually she drank it, then I was able to wean.

You could also mix breastmilk with regular milk.

We had a few friend's whose kid srefused milk and never changed their ways. They got their kids calcium through yogurt and cheese--as long as there are enough servings, its equivalent.

Firstly, love, love, love your blog. I have a 5 yr old girl and 18 mo old boy, so it's nice to have a familiar voice out there!

As for the Q&A:
1. I pumped with both kids, so when the switch time started, we mixed a bit of cow's milk in with my milk, and gradually increased cow's milk/decreased my milk. We took about 2 weeks to make the switch, but it eventually worked. Warming it is key too!

2. LOVE me some oven bags! Even using them in the slow cooker is awesome!

3. As a SAHM, I don't get designated days off, but my husband and I agree that some mental health time is very important for all of our sanity. He agreed after I asked him how he'd feel living at work with his most annoying clients 24/7. I got that very night off!

4. I've lived in Old Navy jeans for years, that's as designer as I get...sorry!
Happy New Year!

You are too funny. Love the comment about the unicorn! THis was a great post.

1. I don't like milk, and my kids don't like milk. Grew up on a dairy farm, maybe that's why. Like the other posts mentioned, my kids also like cheese, yogurt etc. I also give them vitamins every day becuase the Academy of Pediatrics just increased the recommended amounts of daily vit D.

2. Never cooked a turkey breast by itself, but I do know that the oven bags make poultry moist.

3. I am a mostly SAHM, I work one day/week for 4 hours. That is my break, my chance to have adult conversation, and usually on the weekend, I try to slack off and let hubby take over. But I am a bit of a control freak about how things are done, sooo.......

4. I wish I did wear designer jeans, but Old Navy and NY &Co are generally what I buy.

Hope you have a great New Years!

Try Lucky's. They are great jeans AND they are way on sale right now. The stores are having great 50% off sales and the outlet (I was just out in Aurora on Tuesday) is doing buy one, get one 50% off. They do the big sale 2 times a year. I was able to get 2 pairs of $88 jeans for $90 TOTAL. I prefer the sweet n low's, they are mid rise and less "decorated" (read: embellished or with rip marks or bleach lines). Good luck!

#1 My daughter did the exact same thing. We tried Silk Soy Milk and that's what my daughter still drinks at 4. You can buy and store it unrefrigerated which is kind of nice.
#2 No idea. I've only made a whole turkey - the best receipe for that is Barefoot Contessa - "Perfect Roast Turkey" her "Perfect Roast Chicken" receipe is amazing too.
#3 I'm working too so I NEVER get a day off.
#4 Definitely try AG Jeans. I gave up Sevens a long time ago for them.

1. My nephew had the same thing... he liked those yogurt/shake things so my sis-in-law gradually mixed them with milk and now he drinks milk plain.... the warm milk or soy milk sounds good too though!
2. Not a clue- sorry!
3. My hubby and I both work so we are pretty careful to each get our "alone" time. He'll take the kids for a few hours one day and I'll give him a couple hours the next day, or soon after. We don't often get a whole day, but a couple hours can make a big difference!
4. Sorry- again, no help!

Keep up the good work, your blog is great and your kids sound fantastic!
